Border Patrol Inspector Archie Jennings was struck and killed by an automobile while conducting a traffic checkpoint on Highway 101 at San Mateo Flats near Oceanside, California.

They were conducting the traffic stop about three miles north of Camp Pendleton's main gate. A vehicle that had stopped at a stop sign was rear-ended by another speeding vehicle. The stopped vehicle was then catapulted into Inspector Jennings, causing fatal injuries.

Inspector Jennings had served with the United States Border Patrol for three years.
