Add to My HeroesWayne Grant Henebry
Patrolman Wayne Henebry and Patrolman Billy Patterson were shot and killed after Patrolman Patterson had made a traffic stop on Main Street in front of the Marion County Courthouse in Columbia.
The man he had stopped had previously stated that he would kill the first police officer he saw. As a gunfight ensued, Patrolman Patterson called for assistance. Patrolman Henebry arrived, and both officers were shot and killed.
The suspect, who was on parole for his conviction of killing two people in two different incidents, went to his wife's house in order to kill her as well. However, his son was at the house, shot, and killed the man.
Patrolman Henebry had served with the Columbia Police Department for five years. He was survived by his wife, son, daughter, mother, and brothers.

View all 19 ReflectionsI was a young Asst. D. A. at the time of this event. I knew both officers pretty well, having worked with them on cases. I was shocked to learn what had happened and couldn’t hardly believe it. I went to where Polk, the perpetrator, was killed first. I saw that his lifeless body was pinned up against a wall or a fence by a car driven by his son who was protecting his mother. I then went to the morgue. Both officers bodies were already there. No one else was in the morgue at that time. I pulled out each cabinet and had a quiet moment with each friend. That was what it took for me to accept the tragedy that night. Every time there is a memorial service for fallen officers, I remember these two heroes.
