Prison Guard Roger Harty was struck and killed by a hit-and-run driver near the intersection of Angelica Street and Broadway.
He was crossing the street in front of the station at approximately 10:45 pm when he was struck by a speeding vehicle. The driver of the vehicle then turned off his lights and fled at a high rate of speed. Despite there being several witnesses, no one was able to describe the vehicle and no suspects were ever apprehended.
Guard Harty was a veteran of the Spanish-American War and had served in law enforcement for 25 years. He was assigned to the Angelica Street Station. He was survived by his wife and three children.
