Patrolman Andrew Grennan drowned while on a guard post on Pier 4 in Wallabout Basin. He was protecting a load of 200 half-barrels of beer that had been seized in a raid several days earlier.

He was walking around the Baltimore & Ohio Railroad float that was tied up to the pier when he stumbled, struck his head, and fell into the water.

Patrolman Grennan was a United States Army veteran and was assigned to the 46th Precinct.
