Detective Charles George was shot and killed while searching for a burglary suspect.
The man had been identified by articles left behind, and Detective George went to his home to arrest him. The suspect was not there, so Detective George hid under his front porch to await his return. When the suspect approached, he saw the Detective and fled on foot. After losing the suspect, Detective George finished his paperwork and clocked out. As he walked home, he decided to check a residence for the suspect one last time. As he checked a closet, he was shot by the suspect hiding in a large box inside the closet. The suspect then shot and killed himself.
Detective George had served with the Milwaukee Police Department for six years. He is buried at Graceland Cemetery in Milwaukee, Wisconsin.
