Robert Galloway was my maternal grandfather. My mother always kept his picture on her dresser. From time to time as I grew up she would recount, without anger and without bitterness, what had happened to my grandfather. As his oldest child, my mother of necessity took a major role in helping the family cope, having to quit high school and go to work to help her mother support her brothers and sisters.
Despite what she had to go through, I credit her with providing a loving family environment for me. She always spoke highly of my grandfather, and I believe that is a testament to his character.
My thanks to the County of Allegheny and City of Pittsburgh for the memorial to fallen officers.
Though today it has been one hundred years since his passing, I know my grandfather’s name will never be forgotten.
