Patrolman Cornelius Ford, Patrolman Albert Oestriecher, and Corporal George Weidert were shot and killed in the 12th Precinct Station.
Patrolman Ford was walking a man he had arrested for petty larceny to his jail cell when the man grabbed his service revolver and shot and killed him. Patrolman Oestriecher and Corporal Weidert were shot and killed in an ensuing gun battle with the suspect. Other officers subdued the suspect after they shot and wounded him.
The suspect was transported to a hospital and treated for his injuries. On his way back to jail he tried to escape and was shot and killed.
Patrolman Ford was survived by his wife, daughter, and two sons.
