Investigator Robert Evans was killed when a drunk driver caused him to crash on Highway 70 approximately three miles east of Durham, North Carolina.
He was returning to his office after conducting an interview at the Rocky Mount Police Department when a drunk driver cut him off and caused a collision. His wife and daughter, who accompanied him on the trip, were injured in the crash.
Investigator Evans had served with the Alcohol Tax Unit for 25 years. He was survived by his wife and daughter.

Growing up I heard so many stories from my great-aunt about her "big brother". In her eyes, he was indeed a hero for far more reasons than the tragedy and particulars of his untimely death.
