Officer George Ellis succumbed to injuries sustained in a vehicle accident at Sixteenth Street and C Street.
Officer Ellis and another officer were traveling north on Sixteenth Street when a driver traveling east on C Street failed to stop. The vehicle broadsided the patrol car, which overturned twice from the impact.
Officer Ellis died from his injuries the next day.
The driver was charged with negligent homicide but was acquitted.
Officer Ellis had served with the California Highway Patrol for 13 years. He was survived by his wife and his parents.
He is buried at the Casa Bonita Mausoleum in Stockton, San Joaquin County, California.
