Patrolman August Dyke was shot and killed while attempting to apprehend three armed robbery suspects at East 147th Street and Westropp Avenue in Cleveland.
During the ensuing chase, he was shot once in the chest. He was able to return fire and wounded one of the suspects.
The men were later apprehended the shooter pled guilty to murder. The man was sentenced to death and executed on February 16, 1923. The other men were convicted of manslaughter.
Patrolman Dyke had served with the Cleveland Division of Police for seven years. He was survived by his wife and three children.
