Police Officer Frank Carine was shot and killed while performing a wellness check at 16 Deleware Street in Elizabeth.
Two patrol cars arrived at the home after receiving reports of a subject who had been acting strange all day. The man opened fire as Officer Carine entered the home, killing him. Two officers were shot and wounded as they ran into the home to assist Officer Carine. Hearing gunfire, two officers in the area arrived on the scene and wounded the subject, who was the son of a former police officer.
The man was deemed to be insane and committed to the Greystone State Mental Hospital.
Officer Carine had served with the Elizabeth Police Department for at least two years. He was survived by his wife, three sons, a daughter, two brothers, and a sister.
