Sergeant Louis Cannaliato succumbed to gunshot wounds sustained a month earlier when he responded to a disturbance call in the 300 block of Avenue A in Westwego, Louisiana, with another unit.

On April 11, 1965, a subject had been involved in a fight with several people after obscenities were said towards his wife. The man went to his home to grab a shotgun and returned to the scene. When the two units arrived, the shooter opened fire with a fully loaded 12 gauge. Sergeant Cannaliato was struck in the head as he put his unit vehicle into park.

The suspect was shot and killed by other responding officers before they rushed Sergeant Cannaliato and another officer to the Gretna Hospital. Sergeant Cannaliato remained at Gretna Hospital until succumbing to his wounds on May 5, 1965.

Sergeant Cannalitao served with the Jefferson Parish Sheriff's Office for 13 years. He was survived by his wife and four children.
