Add to My HeroesHunter Reedy
Deputy Sheriff Hunter Reedy was shot and killed while assisting officers from the Marion Police Department with a traffic stop at about 5:00 pm.
A Marion police officer had initiated the stop for a moving violation in the town; however, the vehicle drove approximately 1-1/2 miles into Smyth County before stopping near the intersection of Route 16 and Hatchery Road. Several Smyth County deputies responded to assist with the stop.
The driver became extremely agitated after being issued a traffic summons by the officer. The man then shot one of the deputies who approached him. During the ensuing exchange of gunfire, the subject and a second deputy were shot. The subject died a week later.
Deputy Reedy had served with the Smyth County Sheriff's Office for seven years. He is survived by his wife, three children, parents, sister, and grandfather.

It has been an honor to have Hunter Reedy as a friend, and part of my family, and has been the upmost honor to serve with a true lawman. The sacrifices that this incredible man made for his family and community, even before this incident, are almost unfathomable. Love, that would be the best description that one could articulate. A simple word, commonly used, almost to the point that it waters down its meaning. Love, an intense deep affection or devotion. Hunter Reedy was, and still is, just exactly that definition. He loved his family, both immediate, and extended. His children are his world, and he was, and still is theirs. Unconditional love, no matter what challenges or hardship, there was nothing that he would not do for anyone, especially his family. If men are measured, it is a rare occasion to find a man such as Hunter. There will always be that void in many lives now. Although his children, family, friends, and community did not get to be with him as long as any of us had hoped, the impression Hunter has made is a lasting one. Its impressive really, that a man can accomplish what he did in such a short time. The biggest accomplishment was the impact Hunter made on those around him. He instilled so many good things in people, his children, and his community. Any person should consider themselves blessed to have known Hunter, his love was, and still is, abundant and unconditional. It still is because a hero shall never be forgotten, and an impressive man made his mark on the world around him. I miss you, and love you a lot buddy. Thank you for coming into my family, my agency, and my life.
