Patrolman Michael D. Callahan was shot and killed while attempting to apprehend four suspects at present-day 1137 West Madison Street.

While Patrolman Callahan was in the process of arresting four known criminals, they opened fire on him. He returned fire, killing one of the suspects. Patrolman Callahan was taken to a local hospital, where he died the next day from his wounds.

The three remaining assailants were apprehended after a manhunt. The suspected shooter was sentenced to hang, but his sentence was commuted. Another suspect was sentenced to 14 years. The third turned over state evidence, and his sentence is unknown.

Patrolman Michael Callahan served with the Chicago Police Department for less than two years. He was survived by his wife and daughter.

Michael Davitt Callahan was my great uncle and emigrated to Chicago from a place called Callaghan’s Cross in County Kerry in Ireland. All of the family are very proud of his service and sacrifice for the people of Chicago and the USA.
