William Thomas Butler

Investigator William Butler and Inspector Lewis Highsmith, of the United States Customs Service, were killed in an automobile accident while traveling on official business from Wilmington to Raleigh, North Carolina.

As they approached the Black Lake Bridge, on Highway 301, the steering mechanism of their car failed and struck an abutment wall. Investigator Butler and Inspector Highsmith were both killed on impact.

Investigator Butler was survived by his wife.

I am honored to be one of the first to leave a reflection for you and it is especially menaingful to me as you were working in my home state. Your heroism and service is honored today, the 75th anniversary of your death. Your memory lives and you continue to inspire. Thank you for your service. My cherished son Larry Lasater was a fellow police officer who was murdered in the the line of duty on April 24, 2005 while serving as a Pittsburg, CA police officer.

Time never diminishes respect. Your memory will always be honored and revered. Rest In Peace.
