Shane Henry Bartek

Police Officer Shane Bartek was shot and killed while attempting to take action when a woman attempted to carjack him in the 4300 block of Rock River Drive.

The woman approached him in the parking lot of an apartment complex and attempted to rob him of his car. Officer Bartek immediately took police action and attempted to disarm the woman but was shot twice during the ensuing struggle.

The woman fled but was arrested later in the evening and admitted to murdering Officer Bartek. She was charged with aggravated murder and multiple other felonies in connection with the incident. She was found guilty of charges of murder, aggravated murder, aggravated robbery, felonious assault, having weapons under disability, grand theft, and theft. She was sentenced to life in prison with eligibility for parole after 54 years.

An associate of the woman was arrested after a vehicle pursuit in which he was driving Officer Bartek's stolen car. He was charged with failure to comply with an order of a police officer, receiving stolen property, and obstructing official business. The associate pled guilty to failure to comply, receiving stolen property, and obstructing official business for being caught in a stolen vehicle and was sentenced to three years.

Officer Bartek had served with the Cleveland Division of Police for 1-1/2 years and was assigned to the Fifth District. He is survived by his mother, brother, sister, and grandmother,
