Detective Kevin Collins was shot and killed at about 12:05 pm as he and other detectives were conducting an ongoing investigation at a hotel at 210 North Blake Street.
He and another detective were shot as they arrived at the location to serve an arrest warrant. Detective Collins was shot five times.
The suspect, who was wanted for murder in Georgia, was apprehended two days later. He was convicted of first-degree murder and sentenced to 35 years in prison. Another suspect was sentenced to 5 years for violating two federal gun charges.
Detective Collins had served with the Pine Bluff Police Department for five years and was assigned to the Violent Crimes Unit. He was the 2017 Officer of the Year for saving a woman from an apartment fire. He is survived by his parents, brother, and four sisters.
In 2023, the Pine Bluff Police Department Training Center was renamed the Kevin Collins Training Center in his honor.
