Richard Bibbs

Deputy Constable Richard Bibbs was shot and killed from ambush by a neighbor he had arrested several days earlier.

The neighbor became upset with him after he had built a barn on his property in the Bryn Mawr section of Shawnee Township. On April 26th, 1915, Deputy Constable found the man waiting for him with a gun and arrested him. The man was fined $5 in the police court and released.

On the morning of April 28th, 1915, Constable Bibbs came out of his house and began hitching his horse to begin his paper route when he was ambushed by the man with a shotgun. The man shot him in the abdomen, causing a fatal wound. He was taken to St. Margeret's Hospital where he was able to give a deathbed statement to the prosecutor before dying.

A warrant was issued for the subject who was apprehended in 1921. For reasons unknown Wyandotte County officials refused to prosecute the suspect.
