Special Deputy Sheriff Fountain Pendleton was shot and killed in a case of mistaken identity while he assisted with serving a breach of the peace warrant at a home approximately 15 miles from Greensburg.
He and another citizen had been deputized by the sheriff to assist with the warrant service. Special Deputy Pendleton had been placed at the front door of the home as the rest of the posse went to the rear of the home. As the sheriff returned to the front of the home Special Deputy Pendleton opened fire, thinking it was the suspect. Hearing the shot, the rest of the posse also came to the front of the home thinking that the subject was shooting at them.
One of the posse members returned fire and fatally wounding Special Deputy Pendleton.
Special Deputy Pendleton was a U.S. Marine Corps veteran. He was survived by his parents, three sisters, and one brother.
