Night Marshal Gus Cate was shot and killed when he interrupted a burglary in progress at the Palace Drug Store in Goldfield.
He was making his nightly rounds when he observed someone in the store at approximately 1:30 am. As he entered the store to investigate he was shot twice in the chest. Despite his wounds, he was able to return fire but did not strike the subject. He succumbed to his wounds minutes later.
The man who shot him fled the scene and was never apprehended.
Marshal Cate was survived by his wife and two children.
