Mercedes Torres, Sr.

Deputy Constable Mercedes Torres was shot and killed while parked on Rabb Road in Santa Rosa.

He had gone to the location to check on land that he owned. Investigators believed that his assailant was aware of his daily trips to the location and ambushed him. He was shot twice in the torso. Despite his wounds, he was able to return fire but did not strike the subject.

A farmer located him unconscious a short time later and called for assistance. He was taken to Valley Baptist Hospital, in Harlingen, where he died early the next morning.

Deputy Constable Torres had served with the Cameron County Precinct 7 Constable's Office for at least two years. He was survived by his wife and four children.

Thank you to those who left a message and condolences on behalf of my Grandfather. I did not have the opportunity to meet my grandfather. My Mother was his daughter and she and her siblings were very young when my Grandfather was shot. He died in the only hospital that was nearby at the time, Valley Baptist Medical Center. My grandfather was a very big inspiration to all his grandchildren and we were very honored to have been a part of this beautiful memorial that his name was included in. Thank you on behalf of all his grandchildren
