Patrolman Fred Cutler succumbed to a gunshot wound sustained the previous day while attempting to arrest a man for causing a disturbance in town.

The subject had been driving his horse and buggy recklessly through town and had threatened to kill any officer who attempted to arrest him. The Lake Placid village president ordered Patrolman Cutler and another officer to arrest the subject. They located the man inside a barber shop on Main Street. As the officers entered the shop the subject immediately opened fire, striking Patrolman Cutler in the chest and the other officer in the arm.

The man escaped from the scene but was later captured near Bloomingdale, New York. He was convicted of Patrolman Cutler's murder and sentenced to 20 years in prison.
