Deputy Sheriff Frank Curran was shot and killed by an escapee from Marquette Prison.
The inmate, serving a life sentence for murder, had escaped four days earlier after he seized a guard's revolver. Deputy Curran, along with a posse of more than one hundred officers and men, were searching a swamp near Maple Ridge when the suspect opened fire, killing him and wounding a state police lieutenant.
The subject was shot and killed after being located by the posse four days later.
Deputy Curran was survived by his wife and son.
