Deputy Sheriff George Hall was shot and killed while attempting to arrest a man for carrying a shotgun in Clairfield, Tennessee.
Deputy Hall had arrived at a trial for a man who had been charged with resisting arrest by a county constable and was being tried by a justice of the peace. One of the attendees was carrying a shotgun and was asked by Deputy Hall if he had a hunting license. When the man replied that he did not, Deputy Hall attempted to disarm him.
The shotgun discharged during the ensuing struggle and Deputy Hall was struck in the head.
Five men, including the constable who had made the original arrest, were charged with murder.
Deputy Hall was survived by his wife and three children.
