Deputy Sheriff Paul DeRouen succumbed to injuries sustained 22 years earlier when he was struck by a vehicle while struggling with a suspect on Waterman Road near Elk Grove Boulevard.
He and other deputies had responded to a fight call and encountered two men fighting in the foggy street. One of the men refused commands and began struggling with Deputy DeRouen. An oncoming car struck Deputy DeRouen and the man.
The collision caused Deputy DeRouen to lose one leg and his hip, and he suffered massive abdominal injuries. He died as a result of complications of the injuries suffered in the original incident.
Deputy DeRouen had served with the Sacramento County Sheriff's Department for eight years. He is survived by his wife and two children.
