Lieutenant Henry Walpole suffered a fatal heart attack while trying to save several people sleeping in the third story of a building at 137 Bates Street.
The building was shattered by an explosion believed to have been caused by gasoline. Lieutenant Walpole rushed from the police station nearby, fought his way through the flames, and succeeded in alarming the sleepers when he suffered a fatal heart attack.
Lieutenant Walpole served with the Detroit Police Department for more than 21 years.
