View all 283 ReflectionsI was there that night. My partner and I heard the "officer down" call and raced to the scene. We waited long, heavy hours in the dark hoping for news on his condition, but deep down we knew he was in bad shape.
The owner of Palermos must have seen it on our faces that night when he passed by after closing up for the night. He asked what happened and when we told him, he went back inside and made some fresh pizzas for everyone on the perimeter. Maybe he didn't know Dorris, but he respected his life. He just wanted to help.
I think that could be said of most of us who shared his uniform. Maybe we didn't know Dorris personally -- but we respect his life and we knew it could have been any one of us that night. In that way, he was a brother. I was there for him just as I know he would have been there for me. No words necessary - just a steady hand and a willing heart.
Thank you for your service Dorris. I'm proud to have shared the uniform with you. Rest easy.
