Brandon Douglas "Teddy" Breland

Investigator Brandon Breland and Officer Odell Fite were shot and killed after responding to a domestic disturbance call at approximately 8:00 pm on South First Street.

A male subject opened fire on both officers after gaining control of one of their .40 caliber service weapons.

When dispatchers could not reach either officer by radio, they requested assistance from the Stone County Sheriff's Office and the Mississippi Highway Patrol. The responding units located their bodies outside of the mobile home. Neither officer was wearing a bullet-resistant vest at the time of the shooting.

The suspect was arrested at his home in Maxie, Mississippi, a short time later and was charged with two counts of capital murder. He was convicted of both counts of capital murder and sentenced to life without parole.

Investigator Breland had served with the Wiggins Police Department for five years. He is survived by his parents, brother, and fiancee.

19 whole years since we have heard your laugh or seen your smile. You are missed more now than the day you left this rotten Earth. Sometimes in life things are not fair, and this is one of them. I will never understand how things like this happen so frequently. It is funny how the world just keeps on moving like you were never here at all. But Teddy, you were here! You impacted so many lives. To know you, was to know love. Your kindness is one thing I will never forget. I still recall the moment I was told. I was so shocked thinking this could not have been you! My heart shattered that day. To be so young and to have just laid your son to rest. That is another part of life that made yours even more unfair. You went out doing what you loved. In school I never would have guessed you would have had a career as a cop. We had many good times, and I will always remember them. You are forever missed and loved by all.
