While he was inside the house, which was believed to be vacant, he was surprised by the suspect, who was a recent parolee. The suspect shot him execution-style. Inspector Giacomelli's body was found inside the home by another inspector who had arranged to meet him at the scene.
The suspect fled the scene but was shot and killed during a shootout with police two nights later when officers located him in Modesto after receiving a tip on his whereabouts.

View all 205 ReflectionsSitting here reading Paul Holes amazing book about cold cases and was completely blind sided by the fact that you were shot and killed. You and your partner Conaty are so likable in this book and the partnership as well as the friendship you developed with Holes is heartwarming. I can’t imagine what poor Detective Conaty was going through having been in the middle of planning a funeral for his mother he just lost, to then find out about his partner and good friend. God Bless both of you and your families and also Criminalist Paul Holes. You died a true hero and your service and sacrifice will never be forgotten by your law enforcement family.
