Deputy Sheriff James Dooley was shot and killed while attempting to serve a warrant on a man for beating his wife.

During the arrest the man produced a revolver and shot Deputy Dooley point blank in the chest twice. After Deputy Dooley fell to the ground the man shot him three more times.

He was apprehended but as he was being taken to the jail a mob of angry citizens took control of him, lynched him, and then riddled his body with bullets.
