Police Officer Albert Vasquez was shot and killed while patrolling a housing complex at 6200 Marinette Drive during an off-duty security assignment at approximately 10:30 pm.
He and three other officers had just arrested five suspects on narcotics violations and walked them to the security office. Three suspects had been handcuffed, and the remaining two were handcuffed together. One of those two suspects was walking with a crutch due to an injury to his leg.
The three officers and three handcuffed suspects walked into the security office when they heard gunshots outside. One of the officers immediately exited the office and observed the suspect with the crutch shooting Officer Vasquez. The suspect then opened fire on the other officer, striking him in the chest. Despite being critically wounded, the officer was able to return fire and struck the suspect in the leg.
The suspect was taken into custody and charged with capital murder and attempted capital murder. He was sentenced to life in prison on October 23, 2002, after the jury became deadlocked on whether or not to sentence him to death.
Officer Vasquez had served with the Houston Police Department for seven years. He is survived by his wife, two sons, ages ten months and six years, and his parents.

I met Vasquez on 93,94 till his accident.I was running security for a club Xtasis while he and Gomez worked príncipe azul.I was working a bounty Job in the area of Gessner close to Harwin and Vasquez and Rick backed me up it was a relief to see them both.I always admired the way they backed each other up.I use run into him in the Carwash in Gessner many time we were always happy to see each other.I pray for peace for everyone and love.So some years ago on my way to Dallas to do security while in the airplane I wrote a poem I always thought was for a special person for a special time and today by surprise I ran into this website so I will post it it was written by me around year 95.And Rick if you are still out there hi and thank you for being a good friend to Vasquez.
At one time
I saw you shining
The sun rays that
Could be felt
was you smiling,
At another time
I saw you hiding
Behind the clouds that were fogging
Even though I can’t compare your pain
I will remember you my friend
And I will think of you
every time I feel the rain
