Police Officer David Evans responded to a call of "police officers requiring assistance."
As Officer Evans proceeded to the scene three pedestrians ran onto the overpass in front of his patrol car. The patrol car swerved to avoid hitting the pedestrians and crashed through the barrier of the 79th Street overpass and dropped 25 feet, landing on the Dan Ryan Expressway below.
Officer Evans sustained serious injuries which resulted in his death.
Officer Evans had served with the Chicago Police Department for 11 years. He is survived by his three children.
