Timothy Wayne Whittington

Officer Timothy Whittington was shot and killed after he and his partner responded to a first-degree burglary at Tennyson Drive in Charlotte.

The suspect had just stabbed an 82-year-old resident several times and stolen a pistol as he fled from his home. When Officer Whittington stopped a man fitting the suspect's description, he was shot at Dupree and Rozzelle Ferry Road around 5:30 am.

He was transported to the hospital, where he succumbed to his injuries.

The 25-year-old suspect was apprehended and sentenced to 150 years in prison for second-degree murder, burglary, and assault with intent to kill.

Officer Whittington was a United States Marine Corps veteran and had served with the Charlotte Police Department for three years. He was survived by his wife.
