Officer Carl Whippo was shot and killed inside of the police station on Market Street in an unprovoked attack.
Officer Whippo was speaking with another officer and borough councilman inside of the station when a man entered and opened fire with a 12-gauge shotgun, striking Officer Whippo. The other officer returned fire, wounding the subject in the abdomen.
The 22-year-old man was convicted of Officer Whippo's murder and sentenced to life in prison.
Officer Whippo had served with the Johnsonburg Borough Police Department for 14 years and had previously served with the Pennsylvania Fish and Boat Commission and Jones Township Police Department. He was survived by his wife, daughter, three sons, two stepsons, nine grandchildren, one great-grandchild, and two sisters.
