Add to My HeroesPatrick Kelly Behan
Deputy Sheriff Patrick Behan was shot and killed while sitting in his patrol car after responding to a shoplifting call at a Circle K store at the intersection of Hallandale Beach Boulevard and SW 40th Avenue in Pembroke Park.
One man was convicted of murdering Deputy Behan but had his conviction overturned in 2003 when a judge determined that the evidence was not strong enough to convict him.
Deputy Behan had served as a patrol deputy with the Broward County Sheriff's Office for only two weeks. He had previously served with the Boca Raton Police Department for three years and as a detention deputy with the Broward County Sheriff's Office for 2-1/2 years. Deputy Behan is survived by his wife, parents, brother, and sister.

View all 37 ReflectionsNot sure why Deputy Behan came to mind this weekend as its been so long ago that he was taken from the life he led, but we remember him as an outstanding citizen who decided to take up the task of keeping the thin blue line in tact and answering those calls for service which he did.
We his family and friends can be proud of him in every sense in that he was out there doing something outstanding for his community and country.
This nation is fortunate to have those like him who would put themselves at great risk for a complete stranger in grave danger.
God bless you Patrick and those like us who maintain the watch across the nation today, your sacrifice that night will not be forgotten by those who knew you, may it be comforting to us as a people that we have brave officers like you that are out there every day and every night doing there best to maintain law and order across this land.
Rest in peace my old colleague.
