Herbert E. Towne

Patrolman Herbert Towne was killed in an automobile crash during a vehicle pursuit on Route 100 and Route 2.

At 10:45 p.m., he attempted to pull over two vehicles- one merged onto Route 2, and another continued onto Route 95- when he lost control of his patrol car on a curve. The vehicle overturned, ejecting him.

The speeders were never apprehended.

Patrolman Towne was a United States Navy Korean War veteran and had served with the Newport Police Department for five months. He was survived by his parents and sisters.

On today, the 60th anniversary of your death I would just like to say thank you for your service and sacrifice-not just for your Community but for our Country as well when you served with the U.S. Navy during the Korean War. And to your Family and loved ones, I wish to extend my deepest sympathy.
