Lawrence F. Tierney

Officer Lawrence Tierney was shot and killed while pursuing an 18-year-old robbery suspect on Avon Avenue at 9:30 p.m.

As the suspect fled from other officers he ran into an alley behind 869 Grand Avenue and Lincoln Street where he encountered Officer Tierney at point-blank range. The two exchanged shots and Officer Tierney was fatally wounded. The wounded suspect fled but was later apprehended at his home when his father turned him in. He was convicted of first-degree murder, and sentenced to life in prison where he died in 1943.

Officer Tierney had been with the agency for nine years.
