Mack Stubblefield

Constable Mack Stubblefield was shot and killed while conducting a raid on a gambling den on 12th Street at approximately 7:30 pm.

The proprietor of the gambling den had threatened to kill Constable Stubblefield if he attempted to raid the den. Despite the threat, he requested the assistance of a deputy constable and a sheriff's deputy and proceeded to the establishment.

As Constable Stubblefield entered the proprietor stepped out from behind patrons and opened fire, striking him in the head. The deputies returned fire, severely wounding the man. The subject was charged with murder but acquitted at trial two hours later.

Constable Stubblefield had only served as constable for three months and was murdered only five hours before the expiration of his interim term. He was survived by his wife and three children.
