Norman Alexander Stewart

Detective Norman Stewart was shot and killed by an 18-year-old youth who grabbed his partner's service revolver and shot him during an undercover narcotics raid at the Terrace Village Housing Project in the Hill District section of the city.

Detective Stewart and his partner had gone to the youth's apartment at 2425 Allequippa Street to buy marijuana after reports of multiple transactions inside the apartment during their investigation. After the purchase of marijuana, Detective Stewart's partner went inside the apartment's bathroom, and he went outside to signal two more undercover detectives. While Detective Stewart was outside, his partner identified herself as a police officer and was attacked by four women and one male inside the apartment. When Detective Stewart entered the apartment, he was shot in the abdomen and returned fire, killing the subject.

Detective Stewart was rushed to Presbyterian University Hospital where he died an hour after arriving.

Detective Stewart was a U.S Army Korean War veteran and had served with the Pittsburgh Bureau of Police for 15 and a half years. He was survived by his wife, adult daughter, and adult son.
