Police Officer George Stegner was shot and killed after responding to backup another officer at a disturbance at 146 State Street at about 10:25 pm.
One of the suspects withdrew into a dark corner and opened fire, striking Officer Stegner and another officer. Officer Stegner was taken to a local hospital, where he succumbed to his wound in surgery early the next morning.
The suspect fled but was later arrested and sentenced to life in prison.
Officer Stegner had served with the St. Paul Police Department for three years. He was survived by his wife and 6-year-old daughter.
