Officer Schumacher was shot and killed while attempting to arrest several burglary suspects near the intersection of Randolph Street and Larnerd Street. His killer was apprehended, convicted of first degree murder, and sentenced to life in prison May 3, 1890. He received a new trial and was acquitted February 10, 1893.
Officer Shoemaker had served with the Detroit Police Department for 3 years.
