Patrolman Larry Safreed was killed when his cruiser was struck head-on by a drunk driver on Springfield Street in Riverside at 12:30 am.
He had just started his shift at around midnight and was several blocks from the station when he was struck. He was able to call in that he was involved in an accident. Patrolman Safreed was transported to a local hospital where he succumbed to his injuries.
The 35-year-old driver was convicted of involuntary manslaughter and sentenced to 4 to 10 years.
Patrolman Safreed was a United States Navy veteran and served with the Riverside Police Department for seven years and previously served with the Riverside Sheriff's Office. He is survived by his wife, two sons, and a daughter.
