Policeman Fidel Rivera-Mayol was patrolling the streets of the district of Santurce in San Juan during the day. While crossing a street he was hit in broad daylight by a public transit bus driven by a drunk driver.

Policeman Rivera was known as "3minutes" by his department due to his quick response time when he was called to a scene.

Policeman Rivera-Mayol had previously served with the United States Army in Germany during World War II; he was survived by his wife, son, and four daughters.
