Sheriff W. Dewitt Ormsby was killed in an automobile accident on Highway 74 west of Hamlet at 7 pm.
Sheriff Ormsby had served with the Richmond County Sheriff's Office for 12 years and was the Sheriff for only one month. He was survived by his wife and four children.
He is buried at the Eastside Cemetery in Rockingham, North Carolina.
