I respectfully ask that you DENY PAROLE to David McClary, inmate #89A7511. His violent murder of Police Officer Edward Byrne on Friday, February 26, 1988, should preclude any and all consideration for parole.

Officer Byrne was parked in a marked patrol car in front of the house of a witness in a drug case, whose home was being firebombed. Officer Byrne was there to protect the witness. Around 3:30 a.m., two men approached his patrol car, and one of them knocked on the passenger window to distract him. When Officer Byrne turned towards the men, inmate #89A7511 ran up beside the driver's window and opened fire five times, striking Officer Byrne in the head with three bullets from a distance of 12 to 15 inches away.

Inmate #89A7511 was a member of a drug ring whose leader was in a New York prison for drug trafficking. The leader instructed four men to kill the police officer and paid them $8000. After slaying Officer Byrne, inmate #89A7511 and the other men involved were seen bragging and laughing about the murder. There was no remorse.

Police Officer Edward Byrne had just turned 22 years old five days before he was brutally executed. He was a dedicated rookie officer pursuing his dream and following in his father’s footsteps, serving with the New York City Police Department for only seven months. Officer Byrne was a respected member of the community, described as an All-American kid who was considerate and kind. Eddie Byrne had a girlfriend he was planning to marry, but because of his murder, that dream was left unfulfilled. Most importantly, Eddie was a devoted son and brother to his parents and three brothers.

Parole is a privilege and not a right. As a citizen concerned about public safety, I request that inmate #89A7511 be kept behind bars. Justice demands that he be made to spend every remaining day of his FULL SENTENCE in prison.
