The First & The Last
The first to sense the hostility of a suspect,
The first to react to protect his master,
The first to enter where danger lurks,
The first to detect the hidden intruder.
The first to take action against violence.
The first to sense his master’s joy.
The first to know his master’s sorrow or fear.
The first to give his life in defense of his master.
The last to be forgotten by those who work with others like him.
They know him as a “Partner”, not just an animal.

This is an excerpt from a dedication written for another fallen police K9 (Oceanside PD K9 Stryker EOW 12/31/07). Author is unknown and it took some time for me to find this tribute, again, but having worked a dog, I wanted it to be seen again for K9 Rex.
“Some people may ask, Why do you like working a dog? That question is hard to answer. How do you explain the joy of the fur on the uniform, the slobber all over the patrol car, the barking in your ear when you are trying to listen to the radio, the warmth of that furry face against yours as you drive down the road, after he has gotten the kennel gate open (again). How do you explain the comfort he gives you when walking dark streets and alleys, with your faithful partner by your side. How do you explain going call to call, having fun all the way with a best friend by your side. Some may say He Was Just a Dog, but then why would it be, when you spell dog backwards….GOD is what you see”.

So sorry to hear MSP K9 Rex was killed possibly by a drunk driver. Prayer his MSP handler is home safe with his/her family.
K9's are 4 legged officers of the police force. Rex is now experiencing a beautiful, painless and safe place. He is with friends who love him. He will always be loved by those he left behind.

K-9 Rex, you served the people of Michigan with determination, precision and perfection. Losing one of our own leaves the deepest cut. Something MUST be done when a K-9 officer is killed on the job, but especially when killed by a drunk driver.
God has opened His arms for you to jump into and has surrounded you with all the other K-9 officers who now enjoy heaven. May He flood your partner with peace, comfort and the knowledge that you are safe and happy. May He comfort our MSP officers who have lost a fellow Michigander and an outstanding K-9 officer.
