Reflections for K9 Jango

We can't say he was a man, but he was as strong as one. We can call him a good partner, and sometimes, that means more than simply being a good man. Remember not only the good times of his life, the tennis balls, the begging for treats, the puppy training, but the painful ones as well. These painful times of his life, serving his duty and ultimately saving lives; they defined him far more than the connection that came from these good times. He made a difference in the lives of many down the line, even if he saved just one life. For that, he too will be welcomed into the kingdom of God. All blessings upon Jango, officer Mueller, and all heroic officers, regardless of species, who sacrifice so so much for us to spoil our own family with the ultimate treat of love, and life. You were a beautiful dog, and you are a beautiful soul. Farewell.

The First & The Last

The first to sense the hostility of a suspect,
The first to react to protect his master,
The first to enter where danger lurks,
The first to detect the hidden intruder.
The first to take action against violence.
The first to sense his master’s joy.
The first to know his master’s sorrow or fear.
The first to give his life in defense of his master.
The last to be forgotten by those who work with others like him.
They know him as a “Partner”, not just an animal.

Thank you Jango for taking care of all of us in Bakersfield and Kern County. You came to us from the Netherlands. God gave you an important task. You did your job. Now your reward is waiting for you. I know that when Brock crosses over you will be first in line to greet him. Thank you sweet doggie for answering the call. I love you dog. The Bible says that ALL creation will be renewed. Brock I’m sorry for your loss. God bless you.

As a law enforcement family member I have had the sad experience of attending way too many K-9 funerals. It some ways it’s sadder than a human funeral. I’m so glad these brave officers are being recognized for their selfless duties and putting their lives in danger to save the handlers and other innocents lives. I know you’ll be missed not only as a partner but as a loving family member. Rest In Peace and thank you for your service.

This poem was written for K9 Fargo of the Richland County Sheriff's Department in Honor of the unquestionable sacrifices K9's make in their everyday service to their partners and Agencies! Let this poem stand as a tribute to all our K9 Heroes who give the ultimate sacrifice!

“Our K9 Named Fargo"

He was just another Police dog,
I was going to have to train,
He was a beautiful “Belgian Malinois”,
And Fargo was his name.

We worked so hard together,
From sun up until Night,
His future as a Police Dog,
Became our daily plight.

This dog could do anything,
He was so easy to train,
Each day he made me so proud,
My partner “Fargo” was his name.

After months of rigorous training,
Fargo was ready for the road,
It didn’t take long to prove himself,
He was one of the best-I was told!

He hit on the drugs every time,
And tracked down the criminals too,
He did everything I ask of him,
There was nothing he wouldn’t do.

We stayed together day and night,
This dog I had to train,
He was my partner and my friend,
“Fargo” was his name!

It was the 16th of December,
With the moon and stars so bright,
When “Fargo” hit the trail of a robber,
My heart stopped when shots rang in the night!

My Partner was hit several times,
This K9 I had to train,
We cried because he didn’t make it,
My partner “Fargo” was his name!

Lord God of unfailing love, to those families who are suffering in the wake of the loss of a Law Enforcement K-9 family member, help us to provide support. Allow us to be their rock and fortress in a time of immense pain and uncertainty. Help us to keep them safe and nourished in their time of grief, suffering beside them as we move toward healing and reconciliation. Lord, in Your mercy, hear my prayer. Amen.

I was so saddened when I heard that Officer K9Jango had died in action. When I first moved to Bakersfield, one of the ways in which I learned about the city was via a BPD ridealong to get the field of what working conditions were like in the streets as a BPD member was like. For security reasons, I will not list the name of the officer who I rode with. When we stopped to meet up with other officers or join others in the field, I got to meet Jango and his partner. I remember him well. Jango was kind, alert, personable, patient and welcoming to me. He seemed to know instinctively that I was not a danger. Although I did not hear back, yesterday I called the BPD to learn how I could donate to his plague, memorial, rememberance or something in Jango's honor. He made an impression on me that I will not forget. I'm sorry for the BPD and all of Bakersfield's loss.
