GUARDIANS OF THE NIGHT
Trust in me my friend, for I am your comrade.
I will protect you with my last breath
when all others have left you.
The loneliness of night closes in,
I will be at your side.
Together we will conquer
all obstacles and search out
those who might harm others.
All I ask of you is compassion
and the caring touch of your hands.
It is for you that I will unselfishly give my life.
Although our days together may be
marked by the passing of seasons,
I know that each day at your side is my reward.
My days are measured by your footsteps.
I anticipate at every opening of the door.
You are the voice of caring when I am ill.
The voice of authority when I am wrong.
Together we shall experience a bond
only others like us will understand.
Outsiders see us with envy.
I will quietly listen and pass no judgment,
nor repeat your spoken word.
I will remain silent and ever loyal.
When our time is done, you move on in the world.
Remember me with kindness and that nothing
passed among us undetected.
If we should meet again on another street,
I will gladly take up your fight.
I am a Police Working Dog.
We are the guardians of the night.

Sara and so many others like her live with us to teach the value of unconditional service and love. To give herself in the line of duty is an ultimate sacrifice. A sadness fills my heart each time one passes in this way yet I know she did so without hesitation, she was simply doing her work.

What we have once enjoyed we can never lose….All that we love deeply becomes part of us…

Be Well Sara… we honor you

"The Final Inspection"

The policeman stood and faced his God,
Which must always come to pass.
He hoped his shoes were shining.
Just as brightly as his brass.

"Step forward now, policeman.
How shall I deal with you?
Have you always turned the other cheek?
To My church have you been true?"

The policeman squared his shoulders and said,
"No, Lord, I guess I ain't,
Because those of us who carry badges
can't always be a saint.

I've had to work most Sundays,
and at times my talk was rough,
and sometimes I've been violent,
Because the streets are awfully tough.

But I never took a penny,
That wasn't mine to keep....
Though I worked a lot of overtime
When the bills got just too steep.

And I never passed a cry for help,
Though at times I shook with fear.
And sometimes, God forgive me,
I've wept unmanly tears.

I know I don't deserve a place
Among the people here.
They never wanted me around
Except to calm their fear.

If you've a place for me here,
Lord, It needn't be so grand.
I never expected or had too much,
But if you don't.....I'll understand.

There was silence all around the throne
Where the saints had often trod.
As the policeman waited quietly,
For the judgment of his God.

"Step forward now, policeman,
You've borne your burdens well.
Come walk a beat on Heaven's streets,
You've done your time in hell."

IN MEMORY OF K9 SARA

To the family, friends, and colleagues of K9 Sara:

From the beginning of time after Cain killed his brother, Abel, there has been a need for law enforcement officers to protect the weak and to bring evildoers to justice. This work is necessary in a sinful world and is dangerous. In 2014, some nineteen law enforcement canines have sacrificed their lives to protect their handlers and the citizens of this great nation. Today, we honor the sacrifice of K9 Sara, of the Iowa Motor Vehicle Enforcement Department, who was struck and killed in the line-of-duty on Wednesday, October 8, 2014, as she and her handler conducted a criminal interdiction search of a commercial vehicle on the shoulder of I-80 in western Iowa.
Lord God, we are grateful for the life of K9 Sara. She died serving us. Help us never to forget. Help us celebrate the life of K9 Sara and honor her sacrifice. Be with the family, friends, and colleagues of this fallen hero. Comfort them and give them your strength. Guide those who seek to take care of the family of this hero. May those empowered to do so, care for them with integrity. In commemorating the death of this hero, help those who mourn to remember that death is not the end. Death does not have the final say, but is simply the transition to the glorious life to come. Dogs do go to heaven! They should look forward to that life to come with joy and thanksgiving.

As for the citizens of the State of Iowa, help them to faithfully equip their law enforcement officers and canines with the best tools to protect their state. May their training be adequate to the task. Help the citizens of the State of Iowa, to remember to fund their law enforcement canine programs adequately and treat their canine heroes with respect. Help the citizens of the State of Iowa, to obey the law and treat each other with dignity so as not to add to the burden of crime and pain to their state.

The time for mourning will soon pass. We have now remembered and celebrated the life lost in this great tragedy. As the family, friends, and colleagues of K9 Sara go forward, they must celebrate the good things in their lives; and to celebrate life itself! K9 Sara was a significant investment and asset to the Iowa Motor Vehicle Enforcement Department and will be dearly missed.

Finally, Lord God, we pray for the families, friends, and colleagues of all the law enforcement officers and canines who have been killed in the line-of-duty and we thank you for their sacrifices. Bless the lives of their families, friends, and colleagues so they might find healing. Help their law enforcement organizations support the families of these fallen heroes. Even though their deaths might have been senseless, make something good come out of these situations so that their law enforcement organizations and the communities in which they lived and served might be stronger because of their lives and their deaths. In Jesus’ name I pray. Amen.
Now, may the Lord bless you, and keep you: the Lord make His face to shine upon you, and be gracious unto you: the Lord lift up His countenance upon you, and give you peace.
