Thanks for the comments concerning Gero. He was a 4 yr old German Shepherd Male. I was his handler and he charged a burglary suspect after the suspect exited the building and fired at perimeter officers. Attacking the gun hand, he was in the process of taking the suspect down when the suspect pulled out of his pants pocket an additional gun and shot him point blank.

I heard the account of Officer Gero on a Paul Harvey broadcast almost 20 years ago and have been haunted by it ever since.

Even today I get all teary-eyed when I think of the sacrifice K-9 officers are occasionally called to make. My heart goes out to the people who felt Officer Gero's loss the most. I feel better now and just hope I haven't opened old wounds. Thanks for reading.
