I never knew my great-uncle, but from all the stories told to me by my grandmother (his siser-in-law) and the rest of the Mascari family, he was an officer and a gentleman. May he, and all other fallen officers, rest in peace.

I said a little prayer today for Inspector Mascari and his family. He may be gone but never forgotten. He will always be a New York HERO.

I recall the incident and subsequent honor/funeral procession, when as a boy of eight, my father, patrol officer #99, recounted the tradegy of what happened. It made a lasting impression on me, as both my children and grandchildren can attest --them having also heard the story.

I had met Inspector Mascari (and recognized his photo immediately) and many other MVPD officers of the era, some of whom were also close family friends, when I'd often visit the station house.

We don't forget.

Dad - After all these years, the City of Mt. Vernon gave you a beautiful tribute. It touched my heart and reliving those days after we lost you made me so sad again. I will always love you and remember what a wonderful Dad you were. Talking about you brought back some forgotten memories - visiting you at the police station, walking with you to work in a blizzard because you felt you should be at the station house and the last day I saw you.
Love you Dad,
